Samsung NC110 and NC120 – new standards for netbook battery life

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

samsung nc110

Missed this one ENTIRELY a few weeks back (chalk up to my lil vacation away from blogging). Following up on their successful NC10, Samsung has two additional netbooks on the horizon that are sure to dazzle – the NC110 and the NC120. Both netbooks offer better battery life than the NC10 while retaining the same processor – the Intel Atom N270. According to Samsung, the NC110 will have a battery life of around 9+ hours (though LaptopMag found it to be around 7+ hours) while the NC120 is expected to last around 10+ hours (maybe subtract 2 from this value?).

Aside from the battery life changes, you’ll surely love the keyboards on the new netbooks. The NC110 features a 93 percent keyboard while the NC120 will feature a FULL SIZED keyboard. Yes.. you heard me right – a full sized keyboard for a netbook. There is a God.

Of course the NC10 already had an excellent keyboard so all of this is icing on the cake folks.

Additional specs on both new systems include an LED backlit display, a weight of around 2.8+ pounds, a 1.3 megapixel camera, memory card readers, three USB 2.0 ports, and Windows XP Home Edition.

Wondering what these netbooks will be like? Well if LaptopMag’s recent review of the NC110 is any indication, we expect these systems to be winners! The publication had this to say about the NC110 in their March 23rd review:

“Samsung’s updated 10-inch netbook continues to beat the competition with an improved touchpad and more than 7 hours of battery life.”

Good stuff.

The Mondi's slide out keypad

One of the new releases attracting a lot of attention at CTIA is the Samsung SWD-M100 Mondi, a mobile WiMAX enabled handheld device that is designed for use with the Clear mobile WiMAX service from Clearwire. The touch screen Mondi includes a slide out lower lip QWERTY keypad and, according to Samsung, ‘many of the powerful features and uses of a laptop computer or netbook,’ in a unit that fits in your pocket…

New Samsung N310 Netbook Footage and Analysis

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

New netbook releases are a cause for attention, but initial reactions to the Samsung N310 netbook have been less than exhilarating. The machine’s design has been criticized as clunky but without toughness, as well as not being innovative enough to pander to those looking for an alternative to the Atom N270 we’ve seen so much of in netbooks.

More on the Samsung NC20 Netbook

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Samsung NC20

The Samsung NC20 has a few nice features that should pique your interest. The first thing to note is its size, coming in at a larger 12-inches compared to the 10-inch standard of most machines. Secondly, it rocks a VIA Nano CPU, and is one of the only on the market to eschew the Intel Atom for its less well known counterpart.

Though the VIA Nano doesn’t have the big name of Intel’s chip, it’s turned out to be a decent competitor in basically all categories.

The NC20 netbook may assuage most laptop-to-netbook transitioners’ concerns about small screens, but it sacrifices some of the portability the category is known for.

Samsung’s NC310 – for the bacteria-conscious

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Samsung N310

Samsung continues their foray into the netbook market with the announcement of the new Samsung NC310 netbook. The system features a gorgeous frameless 10 inch display, an energy efficient Intel Atom processor on the inside, a beautiful “pebble design” keyboard, and a 5 hour - 4 cell battery. Personally – love the look of the frameless display!

Yet what makes the NC310 really unique is the anti-bacterial finish on the netbook (and we all know how disgusting keyboards, touchpads, and arm rests can get after just a few days of usage).

Other interesting specs include:

  • 1GB RAM
  • 160GB HDD
  • 1.3 megapixel webcam
  • 3 in 1 memory card reader
  • Three USB ports
  • Optional Bluetooth
  • Windows XP Home Edition
  • Weight of 2.6 lbs

The Samsung NC310 should be available in May but no word on price as of yet.
