HP’s MS214 All-In-One PC Delivers

Monday, December 14th, 2009

This HP 18.5 inch all-in-one PC packs quite a punch for a compact computer. The PC offers more than the standard all-in-ones currently in the market.

For starters, it is one of the few all-in-one PC’s that have opted to use a 1.5GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU rather than the Intel Atom processor. Another improvement is the computer’s super-sized memory and storage capacity. The MS214 comes equipped with 2 gigabytes of DDR2, twice the average amount. The PC’s storage capacity is just as high, with 300 GB of storage.

The HP MS214 also includes integrated wireless-n and gigabit LAN connectivity. Both of these greatly facilitate the transferring of files. Lastly, the PC is complete with the addition of a DVD burner.

The only pitfalls of this all-in-one PC are that it doesn’t offer any kind of touch screen capabilities and has a meager six USB ports, two of which will likely be hogged by a keyboard and mouse. Overall, HP’s all-in-one PC offers a lot of bang for $600 bucks.

Verizon Wireless makes it official – HP netbook available starting May 17th for $199.99

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

HP_netbookH4Web

Yes, it’s official. Verizon Wireless announced yesterday that the HP Mini 1151NR netbook would be hitting Verizon Wireless Communications Stores starting on Sunday May 17th for a price of $199.99 after a $50 dollar mail-in rebate and a new two year activation on a Mobile Broadband plan from Verizon Wireless. 3G service plans will begin at $39.99 per month on up – depending on your data bandwidth needs.  This certainly isn’t the cheapest netbook subsidized system out there but it’s the only one available from Verizon Wireless. Your option? Go buy a MiFi 2200 Internet Hotspot device for $99 dollars and then find yourself a cheap netbook. You still have to subscribe to Verizon Wireless mobile broadband but at least this time you can also share your bandwidth with multiple Wi-Fi enabled devices (up to 5).

Intel Atom Processors Now Used in Computing Devices Other Than Netbooks

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

In addition to being used in netbooks, the Intel Atom processor is now also being used in various desktops. One such example is the Hewlett Packard MediaSmart Server LX195 desktop unit (pictured below), which can powered by a 1.6GHz Intel Atom 230 processor.

intel_atom_outside_netbooks

The Atom processor is slower than most of the other processors (Intel Celeron, Core 2 Duo, etc.) that are currently used in laptops and desktops, but it is also cheaper. The Intel Atom 230 processor chip is roughly $30 while the relatively more powerful Intel Celeron chip is roughly $35. Intel Core 2 Duo processor chips are roughly $100+.

Can HP Netbook Subsitute for a Regular Laptop?

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Netbooks are gaining in popularity against laptops, cell phones (Blackberries and iPhones in particular), and other mobile devices used for business purposes. Boasting ultraportability, many company executives and businessmen are using netbooks more and more on a daily basis, especially during business meetings and short business trips.

Since their weight is roughly half the weight of a laptop, netbooks are less of a burden to transport. Also, it is easier to access and view documents on a netbook than on the screen of a cellular device.

Buy.com offers refurb HP Mini 1033CL for $279.99

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

HP 1033CL

Yeah.. as you can tell – I’m trying to deliver more news on netbook deals (not that we don’t have enough general netbook news to cover on a daily basis of course). However, I figure a large number of you are probably coming to our site simply to find out more info on netbooks and heck.. maybe find a good deal here and there.

Thus, here’s another refurb deal for you to consider. This time it’s Buy.com and they’re offering the HP Mini 1033CL netbook for a mere $279.99. The system features the Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 60GB HDD, a 10.2 inch WSVGA display, Ethernet, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, Webcam, and Windows XP Home Edition.

If you’ve never been a fan of purchasing refurb equipment – I don’t blame you. It might very well be a hit or miss thing.. however, the one time I did purchase a refurb was from Buy.com and it was for an HP desktop PC which has worked perfectly fine over the last year+. Will you get the same experience with this product? Beats me.. but if you’re looking to save some dough, buying a refurb might just make sense.

About the only major con with this HP netbook is the stupid mouse button placement.. grrr.

HP Pavillion dv2 Netbook Packs 320 GB of Disk Space

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

The new HP Pavillion dv2 is a thorn in the side of those who’d hope to distinguish notebooks and netbooks once and for all, but that doesn’t kill our enthusiasm. Regardless of what category it falls into, the new device is intriguing.

HP Pavillion dv2

HP announced the Pavillion dv2 netbook back during CES 2009; a 12.1-inch machine running a 1.6 GHz AMD processor. It’s reportedly the first netbook to implement the AMD Athlon Neo processor, a chip meant to overtake cheaper chips (like the Intel Atom) in terms of processing power in order to run the 12-inch device.

Naturally, the larger processor has taken its toll on the new netbook’s pricetag. The HP Pavillion dv2 will cost you a garish $749, but on the other hand it has features to compensate: 720p HD resolution, 4 GB of RAM and a monolithic 320 GB hard drive. HP’s new netbook is a powerhouse, enough so that the company feels comfortable making it only compatible with Windows Vista.

No release date for the HP Pavillion dv2 is known so far, but you can reserve one now at HP’s site.

HP Pavilion dv2 with Athlon Neo processor finally available

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

HP dv2

The HP Pavilion dv2 is finally available for purchase – albeit available only in one configuration right now priced at $749.99. This notebook ushers in the age of “affordable ultraportables” – systems that are small, fairly inexpensive, and decent performing. While $749.99 is certainly more expensive than the original $699 starting price, you do get quite a bit for this system including:

  • AMD Athlon Neo processor (MV-40)
  • 12.1 inch 1280 x 800 LED BrightView Widescreen Display
  • 4GB DDR2 memory
  • ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3410 graphics
  • Ethernet and 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • SuperMulti 8x DVD+-/R/RW with DL support
  • 320GB 5400 RPM SATA HDD
  • 6 cell lithium ion battery
  • 3 USB ports
  • HDMI output
  • Altec Lansing with SRS Premium Sound

PC Magazine is one of the first out with a review of the dv2 – having this to say about the system:

“The HP Pavilion dv2 (1030-us) is a more powerful and louder version of the Dell Inspiron Mini 12, and it’s aimed at the frugal shopper.”

Apparently heat is a slight issue with the dv2 resulting in a louder fan – something netbook users are certainly not accustomed to all the time.

Refurb HP Mini-Notebook 1030NR available for $279.99 at Buy.com

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

HP Mini netbook

Came across another sweet netbook deal. This time it’s for a refurbished HP 10 inch Mini-Notebook 1030NR (model FW376UA) at Buy.com. For $279.99 you get a system with the following specs:

  • Intel Atom Processor N270 1.6GHz
  • 1GB RAM
  • Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
  • 16GB SSD
  • 10.1 inch LED BrightView Infinity Widescreen Display (1024 x 576)
  • 10/100 Ethernet
  • 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi
  • HD Audio
  • Stereo Speakers
  • 82 keyboard at 92 percent full size
  • 2 in 1 digital media reader (SD and MMC)
  • 2 USB ports
  • Measures 10.3 x 6.56 x 0.99 inches and weighs 238 lbs
  • 3 cell Lithium Polymer Battery
  • Windows XP Home Edition with SP3

My only complaint would be the measly 16GB SSD but otherwise this seems like a solid deal. For what it’s worth, I’ve purchased a refurbished HP system before from Buy.com and the system (it was an HP Pavilion desktop PC) still works like a champ (had it for one year now).
